Preparation of Dry Powder Inhaler (DPI) in Pharmacy industry by Ultrasonic Spray Drying
Dry Powder Inhaler (DPI) is a drug delivery system in which one or more micronized drugs and carriers (or none) enter the respiratory tract in the form of dry powder after being administered by a special drug delivery device in the form of capsule, vesicle and other multi-dose storage, so as to play a systemic or local role. According to different administration sites, it can be divided into nasal powder spray and oral powder spray (lung inhalation). At present, the listed products of powder aerosol are generally inhaled into the lungs through the mouth, including antihistamine drugs, bronchospasmolysis drugs and steroids for the treatment of asthma. The drug particle size of dry powder inhaler is the key factor affecting inhalation. A reasonable method to evaluate the particle size in powder spray is to use aerodynamic diameter. It is generally believed that the appropriate aerodynamic diameter for pulmonary administration is 1-5 μm.
Using ultrasonic atomization technology, the suspension can be uniformly atomized into micron or submicron aerosol droplets, and the atomized droplets can be sent to the high temperature chamber for drying by carrier gas. Ultrasonic spray drying can produce more uniform, smaller and powder particles with better morphology than traditional spray drying (centrifugal sprayer or air sprayer). At present, Siansonic ultrasonic spray drying nozzle and ultrasonic aerosol generator have successfully completed the preparation of 5-micron dry powder inhalable drug in the laboratory. Ultrasonic spray drying with advantages of high production efficiency and great particle uniformity are expected to become an excellent solution for mass production of dry powder inhalable drug particles in the near future.
Siansonic has almost 40 years of experience in ultrasonic atomization technology, and can provide various ultrasonic spray drying solutions to customers from R&D to mass production. Siansonic patented ultrasonic spray drying nozzles and ultrasonic aerosol generators have the advantages of high temperature protection, self-cooling, fine and uniform atomized droplets, and can be easily and quickly connected to the existing spray drying equipment.
